Find the Right Desk and Chair Height for Comfortable Work

Why desk and chair height matter

A desk and chair that fit your body can make everyday work more comfortable and help you maintain a relaxed posture. If your chair is too low, you may raise your shoulders to reach the desk. If it is too high, your feet may dangle or your wrists may bend awkwardly. There is no single ideal measurement for everyone, so use your posture as a guide and adjust the furniture to suit you.

Set your chair first

Sit with your back supported and your shoulders relaxed. Adjust the chair so your feet rest flat on the floor, with your knees roughly level with your hips or slightly lower. Your thighs should feel supported without pressure behind the knees. If the chair cannot go low enough, use a stable footrest rather than letting your legs hang.

Adjust the desk to your arms

Once the chair is set, position the desk so your elbows rest near your sides and bend at about a right angle when your hands are on the keyboard. Your forearms should be approximately parallel to the floor, and your wrists should remain straight. A desk around 28 to 30 inches high suits many average-height adults, but this is only a starting point; body proportions and chair settings vary.

Check your screen and working position

Place your monitor directly in front of you, about an arm’s length away. The top of the screen should be at or just below eye level, so you can look ahead without tilting your head. Keep frequently used items within easy reach, and avoid leaning forward to see or type.

Fine-tune for comfort

Take a few minutes to test your setup while doing normal tasks. If your shoulders rise, lower the desk or keyboard position where possible. If your wrists bend, adjust the keyboard and mouse. Make small changes, and remember that even a well-adjusted workstation benefits from regular movement. Stand, stretch, and change positions throughout the day rather than staying still for long periods.
